Tianjin Institute of Pharmaceutical Research has established a series of national and local key laboratories, technical engineering centers and service platforms, and formed a sound drug research and development chain, with research and development strength in innovative drugs, generic drugs and new preparations, and with good proprietary evaluation service capacity in chemical drugs, traditional Chinese medicine and biological drugs. As the output source of new pharmaceutical technology and the comprehensive service carrier in the industry, Tianjin Institute of Pharmaceutical Research explores the unknown and continuous progress on the road of pharmaceutical development.

State Key Laboratory of Drug Release Technology and Pharmacokinetics was established with the approval of Ministry of Science and Technology in December 2010. As the attached institution to CSSX, State Key Laboratory of Drug Release Technology and Pharmacokinetics jointly set up an office with ISSX becoming the first national partner of ISSX in the world.

Under the leadership of academician Changxiao Liu, the laboratory carried out research work in many fields, such as new drug discovery, dosage form design, drug release technology, pharmacokinetics and safe and effective biological effects in vivo, with the main line of drug release technology and pharmacokinetics research. The research directions include: ① Molecular simulation of pharmaceutical preparations; ② Biopharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics of pharmaceutical preparations; ③ Research of drug release technology; ④ Research of modern TCM preparations.

Traditional Chinese medicine is the treasure of the Chinese nation. The research of modern TCM preparations and quality control is an important way and means to realize the modernization of TCM. Since the 1980s, Tianjin Institute of Pharmaceutical Research has developed the first TCM drop pills, soft capsules and other modern preparations, undertaken major national science and technology projects (Key projects in the “7th and 8th five-year plan”, the “11th Science and Technology Support Plan”, “Major New Drug Creation”, “Key R & D Project”, “TCM standardization construction”, “Key Project of National Natural Science Foundation”, etc.), completed more than 100 new drug quality standards, 10 standardized demonstration studies on Chinese herbal medicines and one  Chinese patent medicine, 50 Chinese herbal formula granule quality standards, and performed a study on improving the quality standard of 14 large varieties of Chinese patent medicine. In 2011, NDRC approved the establishment of “National and Local Joint Engineering Laboratory of modern TCM preparations and Quality Control Technology”.

NDRC, MOST, MOF, General Administration of Customs and State Administration of Taxation jointly released the List of Newly Identified and All State Enterprise Technology Centers in 2020 (the 27th batch).Technology Center of Tianjin Institute of Pharmaceutical Research Co., Ltd. Technology Center is approved as the national enterprise technology center. It is another national technology innovation platform of Tianjin Institute of Pharmaceutical Research following “State Key Laboratory of Drug Release Technology and Pharmacokinetics” and “National and Local Joint Engineering Laboratory of modern TCM preparations and Quality Control Technology”. The technology research and innovation organization set up by the technology center for the enterprise is responsible for formulating the technological innovation plan of the enterprise, carrying out the industrial technology research and promoting the implementation of the whole process of technological innovation, and is the representative of the technological innovation ability of the enterprise.

Tianjin Institute of Pharmaceutical Research has been committed to innovative research and development of traditional Chinese medicine for more than 60 years, and independent research and development of 41 new Chinese medicine, won new drug certificate and realized the industrialization. In terms of TCM internationalization research, Tianjin Institute of Pharmaceutical Research has provided important technical support for the international registration of protoparaxotriol saponins, compound Danshen dripping pills, Guizhifuling Capsules, etc. In addition, Tianjin Institute of Pharmaceutical Research also undertook and completed the research of multiple intergovernmental international cooperation projects. Following the establishment of “China-ASEAN Joint Laboratory for International Cooperation in Traditional Drug Research” with Guangxi University of Chinese Medicine in 2018, the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine “China-ASEAN Regional Characteristic Innovation R & D International Cooperation Base” declared by Tianjin Institute of Pharmaceutical Research in 2020 was approved, marking the TCM internalization to a new step. The research team will carry out systematic research work from three aspects: international recognition of TCM quality, international registration of TCM and international market access for health products.
